About Hubei University

Hubei University, jointly developed by Hubei Provincial Government and the Ministry of Education of China, is a key comprehensive university administrated by Hubei Province and one of those supported by the “Project of Fundamental Capacity Construction of Central and Western Higher Institutions”.

Established in 1931, Hubei University offers at its main campus 77 undergraduate (bachelor’s degree) programs, 145 postgraduate (master degree) programs, 41 doctoral programs and 5 post-doctoral research programs, covering arts, history, philosophy, science, engineering, economics, law, management, education, medicine, literature, and agriculture.

Hubei University has its eighteen faculties: Creative Art, Arts, History & Culture, Resource & Environment, Business, Politics & Law & Public Administration, Mathematics & Statistics, Computer Science & Information Engineering, Journalism & Communication, Life Science, Physics & Electronic Engineering, Chemistry & Chemical Engineering, Material Science & Engineering, Physical Education, Education, Foreign Studies, Philosophy, and Chu-cai (Hubei Talents). The main campus also includes International College, Continuing Education College, and College of General Education. The student enrollment on main campus amounts to 20,000, including 4,700 postgraduates. Each year, 200 international students enroll in different degree or foundation courses, including those students with Chinese Government Scholarship, Confucius Institute Scholarship, Hubei Provincial International Student Scholarship and President Scholarship of Hubei University.

Hubei University attracts more than 1100 distinguished research faculty and teaching staffs. Among them, there are 620 professors and associate professors, 2 academicians. The university has always laid emphasis on scientific research and has been actively engaged in national and regional independent innovation projects. Currently, Hubei University has 2 state key laboratories, 5 provincial key laboratories, 8 provincial research bases of humanities and social sciences, 1 provincial pilot test base.

Located in central Wuhan--a metropolis in central China, Hubei University covers an area of 300 acres. The campus has convenient transportation and well-equipped infrastructure. The school buildings cover an area of 700,000 square meters. The library has a collection of over two million paper-back books and electronic books, making it a comprehensive information center. The students are also free to visit campus public facilities including science and teaching buildings, academic exchange center, sports stadiums, university hospital, etc. HBU is also convenient for students to touch the grandeur and glory of Chu Kingdom’s culture existing 2000 years ago, with an easy access to the well-known Yellow Crane Tower, and the beautiful scenic East Lake, and a joyful and fruitful excursion to the world-famous Three Gorges on the Yangtze River, magnificent Jingzhou ancient fortress, adventurous and mysterious Shennongjia Forest Reserve, and spectaculars Wudang Mountains -- the cradle of Chinese Taoism and martial arts.

With an international vision, Hubei University keeps making breakthroughs in international exchange. It has established stable relationship of exchange and cooperation with more than 100 universities and research institutes in over 30 countries and regions. It has co-established two Confucius Institutes (hereafter CI for short) in USA and Brazil respectively. The CI established together with the University of Memphis in USA was opened on August 13th, 2007 and the CI established together with the University of Sao Paulo State in Brazil had its Inauguration Ceremony on November 26, 2008.

The International College of Hubei University is dedicated to international students’ enrollment, administration and management, as well as Chinese language and culture teaching and training. It has been the destination of studying for over two thousand international students from more than 40 countries. Hubei University has been accepting international students since 1960s, and it has now become an ideal place for international students to live and study.
